Whether you already have years-old privacy policy page or does not have it at all, a new and revised privacy policy is needed to comply with GDPR guidelines.But, what to write in it? Well, before you go into that, you have to audit your existing blog setup and have to make a list of services and features using cookies for their functioning.
You can either use a cookie scanning service for the same or you can simply enlist the services used on the blog.
If you prefer the latter approach, let's use a simple example to understand it better. I'll use this very blog as an example. Here's a list of 3rd party services used on this blog.
- Google AdSense
- Amazon Partner Program
- Disqus Comment System
- Google Analytics
- Google Feedburner
Now, here's my blog's privacy policy page. Feel free to copy, edit, modify and extend it for your own blog. Make all the required changes including the site name and the name and the address of the data controller before using this privacy policy on your blog.
If you carefully see the copy of the privacy policy, you'll notice 4 distinct sections about all the 4 services already mentioned above. You may also notice that each service's section include links to enable the visitors to manage the cookie and data collection settings for the respective service.
If you're using one of these services on your blog, retain those sections and delete other services' section. For those services which are not included in the privacy policy, you have to create additional sections.

Now that you've created a privacy policy page and have linked to it from one of the sections in your blog's layout, it's time to integrate the custom GDPR cookie notice system.Cookie notice placement - Before we move ahead towards the integration process, let's take a look at its appearance and the placement. Both the appearance and the placement can be customized if you want to do so.
Here's the desktop screenshot of the cookie notice. You can see that it appears on the bottom-right of the screen which makes it unobtrusive.If the sidebar on your blog is on the left and the content section is on the right, you can customize the cookie notice to appear on the bottom-left side of the page. There are other placement options too which can be used as per your preferences.
And, here's the screenshot of the cookie notice on a smaller device like a smartphone or a tablet. One can see that on a smaller device, the cookie notice automatically expands at the bottom to cover the entire width of the screen.This placement on a smaller device is least obtrusive and allows easy browsing of the web page. I'll strongly advise against changing this placement location on smaller devices.
Notice display trigger - This cookie notice is required only for visitors residing in one of the countries of the European Union. For other visitors, this cookie notice is not required at all.
That's why this cookie notice system automatically detects if the visitor is from the European Union or not. If it's the former case, the cookie notice is displayed and if the latter condition is met, the cookie notice is not displayed at all.
Cookie duration - Once the visitor clicks the cookie notice button and dismisses it, a consent cookie is set on the visitor's computer for 365 days.
Now, until the cookie expires or the visitor himself clears the cookie before the expiration, the cookie notice is not displayed again on all the future visits to the blog.
Cookie notice elements - The notice has 3 key elements viz., a message, a link to the privacy policy page, and a button.
The button, as mentioned above, serves a dual purpose. Firstly, it dismisses the cookie notice (when clicked) and secondly, if clicked, it also sets the consent cookie on the visitor's browser for 365 days.
The message informs the visitors about the use of cookies on the blog. And, the Learn more link points to the privacy policy page created earlier on the blog.
Installation process - Let's start the GDPR cookie notice integration. All the required code for this cookie notice should be inserted right above the closing
